Psalm 95:1-2 NIV
"Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord ; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music and song."
As a Christian who worships in a pentecostal atmosphere, these verses may mean something different to me than to others. We enjoy joyful expressions of worship as do many. We enjoy music as do many. We enjoy God as do many.
Worship is an emotional journey. It is a time to express our joy as David did. He was not ashamed to express his love for God in a boisterous manner. He was also one to enjoy worship with others. Worshipping with others adds energy to it.
Expressing our joy in worship can lead to shouting aloud to our Almighty King. David sees it as a joint effort - everyone together. We are exclaiming the joy we find in salvation.
As an emotional expression, worship still needs caution. Some tend to carry emotionalism to areas not seen in the Bible and then they tend to believe the experience is all they need.
The expressions we see in the Bible do include dancing and shouting a joyful noise. Losing control is not seen. David danced estactically before the Lord but he was fully aware of what he was doing.
David says to come "before Him" with thanksgiving and with song. We are approaching God in worship to thank Him and place Him in the highest honor. If we worship for any other reason, we may be doing it for ourselves and not as an means to approach God.
Side note: there are times we may not "feel like" worshipping. Let me encourage you to try anyway. There is something about expressing joy that awakens our soul. In those moments as you put God first, you begin to feel His presence. Worship Him and see how He responds in your life.
