He Hears Your Voice

Psalm 116:1-2 NIV

"I love the Lord , for he heard my voice; he heard my cry for mercy. Because he turned his ear to me, I will call on him as long as I live."

Ever been in a crowded room and you hear your name?  You look around and can't find the person who called you until you realize there is more than one person in the room with your name.  Being a parent and hearing a child yell, "Daddy!" makes me look every time.

Listening is different for God.  When God listens, he hears what we say.  He doesn't have to sort through us in order to figure out who called His name.  He is quick to listen and hears our individual voice.  He knows us by name at the sound of our voice.

God hears our cries for mercy.  He listens for us to call out for His love.  This was more than enough for the Psalmist to love God.  God did not have to do any tricks.  The Psalmist was happy enough to know God is listening just like a parent should be when their child calls out.

If you are a parent, you can learn something from this passage.  Our gift in raising the children we have comes from God.  At best, we should know the voice of our child as soon as they cry out.  As God seeks to give mercy, so should we. If not, they will stop crying out for us and start seeking something else.

We should not covet that cry, however.  When our kids cry out, we should go to them, show mercy, and tell them how God's mercy is so much greater.  One day our kids might not be close enough to hear.  They need to know where we turn for our comfort.

Where do you find comfort?  Most assuredly your kids or others around you will look there also.
