2 Timothy 1:7 NIV
"For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline."
All the talk of war around the world, all the ramping up of support for air strikes against Syria, and all the foolishness that is leading to violence show we need a better understanding of this verse. The first word we need to look at is timid. Timid here refers to being afraid. We are not to fear being a Christian. I believe fear is the reason so many are dropping the word Christian for words like follower of Christ. They fear being labelled. Christianity should not bend in faith and in practice due to the labellings of the world. At the same time we need to better define Christianity so others know for certain what being a follower of Christ looks like.
The second word, power, refers to inherent, moral, and influential power. God's Spirit resides in us to bolster what He has given us inherently. He has given us the power to influence our families, friends, community, and the world. Read Acts 1:8 and see what it says to you after reading this. Power is not a muscle exercise but a mental one. We have the power to act morally in a manner that influences our surroundings. We have the gift of true hope.
The third word, love, refers to brotherly love, good will, and benevolence. Imagine a church congregation that is kind to each other. Imagine taking that kindness and turning it into good will as the congregation engages its community. Imagine that good will being followed up with benevolence. What opinion would the world have of Christians?
The fourth word, self-discipline, is important. It refers to having a sound mind and acting in moderation. One should try to be courageous without compromising their faith. Having a sound mind requires stability. Stability comes from learning to be sensitive to the leadings of the Holy Spirit. To do this one has to pray, read the Bible, and have regular interaction with other Christians. Why? The world is filled with imbalance and depressing news. Being around other Christians helps to encourage us. Reading the the Bible helps us to check what we may be hearing from God's Spirit to make sure we are listening correctly. Praying keeps us close to God. These disciplines help us to balance our lives.
Wars and rumors of war are a part of our world. However, they should not distract us from living timid free lives. Listen to the Holy Spirit. Let Him give you power, love, and a sound mind. Act in these disciplines and see how life changes and hope emerges. Enjoy today.
