1 John 3:18 NIV
"Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth."
All talk and no action. That saying has been around for a long time. It simply tells us that some people say all the right things but for whatever reason they fail to follow through on their words. Words are strong. Some say the pen is mightier than the sword which is true if the author is able to inspire action.
John was bringing to light the talk coming from people who professed love but the professions were not followed with action. Regardless of who may believe it - love is an action verb. It is best described through our actions and not just in how elegantly we can say it.
Loving with words and speech may feel good. It may inspire the masses. Actionless love, however, falls on deaf ears. I was once told a baby can give up life in the first few moments after birth if it does not feel the touch of someone. I do not know how true this is nor do I call for testing this thought. I am trying to illustrate how basic love can motivate life in others.
Actions speak louder than words. I struggle everyday to put my love into action towards my kids and my wife. When I fail to do so I feel empty. I cannot imagine how empty my family feels.
Now multiply that in a world that is growing up without feeling love - genuine love - from those around them. The church may be the last vestige from which people can experience real love.
Imagine godless love. Imagine millions of people languishing through life because they will not experience God's lovingkindness. Now look at your life. How are you purposely planning to share love? Are you aware of how deep and how wide the love of God is? Are you aware of His everlasting and unrelenting love? Are you aware that God's love can never be depleted?
Are you hoarding God's love or are you sharing it? If you are hoarding it, how many lives are being stunted or are dying because of it? Will John's words fall short or will they inspire you? Motivate life - share love.
