Deuteronomy 6:6-7 NIV
"These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up."
I could spend a week on this. But to keep you reading I will share a few thoughts.
Jesus did not come to get rid of the commandments. Modes of worship have changed and sacrifice has become a thing of the past, but the primary ten commandments or ten words still add value to our lives and to our worship.
Moses says these commands should be on our hearts. This means the word of God should be in our minds. They should be what we daily reflect upon. They should be added to our memory. In total, they should be the seat of our emotions and our passions. How can you share something you are passionless about?
Moses says we should also impress them on our children and gives us a short "how-to" lesson to try. Until we get the first part we will have a very difficult time with this.
Here is the how-to:
First, talk about this when you sit at home. Have a devotional time with your kids or spouse. Nothing elaborate. Read a verse or two and talk about it. Discuss a subject your kids may have a question about.
Second, it does not always have to be at home. You could talk to them while riding in the car or while taking a walk in the park. There are many opportunities to discuss the Bible with your kids. When you wake up and before you go to sleep are great times to reflect upon God.
Your passion will show. What have your kids been seeing lately?
