1 Corinthians 13:2 NIV
"If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing."
I am a big proponent of spiritual gifts. I am one of those who believe that spiritual gifts have not faded nor did they cease to exist when the original apostles died. But that is another verse for discussion.
Spiritual gifts do not make us Christian. Prophecy that can save the world is just a bunch of words if we do not love. Prophecy is meant to give direction and encouragement to the church. Without love, prophecy losses its urgency or one may use it to further one's own agenda (happened in the Old Testament). Love imparts meaning to prophecy by revealing the motivation behind the prophet.
Jesus said proper faith can move mountains, but without love, Pauls tells us the one who yields this faith is nothing. Improper faith can be manipulated by self preservation or other selfish motives. Faith infused with love will move mountains to show that love.
As a Christian, we must ask ourselves if we are doing church things for our selves - for our own self preservation in heaven - or for Christ because we love Him so much we cannot help but to share His love.
