James 3:9-10 NIV
"With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be."
I was playing a game last night with people from around North America. A young kid was playing and he made a move that ended his gameplay. Immediately he began to talk down about his move, so I began to tell him that his move created a greater opportunity for our team to win. You should have heard the change in his tone. He sounded chipper and began to relate why he did what he did. I took another opportunity to lift up his thinking. In the same game during other matches, I have heard people tear others down. I do not want to do that.
How many people have been driven to depression because of our words? How many people have started thinking less of themselves due to how we tore them down? Is that how God speaks to us?
How can I praise God on Sunday and turn my back on Him Monday through Saturday? We all get frustrated which is why it is so important to beware of how we react so we can learn to control our tongue.
Controlling our tongue begins with our thoughts. Our tongue will reveal what we are thinking when we lose control. We need to be aware of those situations that cause us the most anger or anxiety. We need to learn to think things through - beforehand. Practice counting to ten. Don't sit while you are discussing something that angers you. Ask questions and learn why something irritates you. Change your thinking process and you will change your tongue's progress.
There are many tools out there to help us diffuse a situation before our tongue gets in the way. Learn to be a communicator and a listener. You will find life a lot easier.
