Romans 5:20-21 NIV
"The law was brought in so that the trespass might increase. But where sin increased, grace increased all the more, so that, just as sin reigned in death, so also grace might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."
God doesn't make us guilty. In fact to prove how guilty we are, He gave us the law. The law showed that people are a lot more guilty than they care to admit. But there is grace - God's love and mercy wrapped up in His desire to forgive those who ask. Grace covers all sin, and there will always be more grace than sin.
Grace came at a price. Not a price that we could ever pay. It was the price of death - the death of Jesus, our Savior. Sin once reigned in death which means its only outcome led to death in life and afterwards. Jesus came so we can live now and forevermore. He trumped sin's reign with grace. His righteousness was more than enough to thwart the power of sin. This makes Him Lord.
If our society is to get along in the future, then does the passage of more and more laws free us or make us more guilty? If the presence of the law only shows more guilt and cannot save us, then how do additional laws make us less guilty? Only grace can free us and trump the power of sin, so instead of pushing Christ out of the public square, shouldn't our government be seeking more of His presence?
