The Resurgence of Wisdom

Micah 4:1-5

This is a fascinating prophecy. Micah declares the resurgence of the Temple as the seat of wisdom in which many nations come to seek God’s counsel.

Verses 1-4 pronounce profound peace and hope. I long for a day when nations cease training for war, and they work to save one another and stop trying to live in dominion over others.

Verse one says the Temple will become chief among mountains (sorry Dali Lama). People will stream to Jerusalem to get to know God, as verse two reveals. People will seek to know God’s teaching. They will genuinely seek to walk in the Way. The Word of the Lord will proceed from Jerusalem, and His law will be established among the nations.

Verse three says God will be judge among the nations and His judgment will settle disputes among strong nations. Nations will be so confident in God’s rulings that they will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. War will not be deemed a method for settling disputes any longer. Oh what a wonderful day that will be!

Even individuals will be at peace according to verse 4. Every man will sit under his own vine and fig tree! No one will want anymore. Everyone will have means to care for their families. Even more no one will fear others: no theft, bribery, manipulation, or hoarding. Why? God has spoken. How beautiful this day will be!

All the nations may walk in the name of their gods; we will walk in the name of the LORD our God for ever and ever. Micah 4:5 (NIV)

Verse five is a little difficult to understand. Up to this point, I had believed Micah may have been speaking of the return of Christ. Is Micah saying that during these days man can still choose a god to follow?

Many nations will come and say, "Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob. He will teach us his ways, so that we may walk in his paths." The law will go out from Zion, the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. Micah 4:2 (NIV)

In verse two, we may have a clue. Micah says many nations will come. He is declaring that in time nations will come to accept the truth proclaimed from Zion. Some will try to hold on to their gods, but peace and prosperity witnessed by these nations will motivate them to leave their false gods and seek God fully. This all starts with those who receive Jesus as their Savior. We alone are now tasked with the spread of the Word of God established by Christ n Jerusalem. He laid down His life in peace so that all could come peacefully to God.

Knowing God intimately, I believe firmly that we are God’s agents of peace in this sinful world. Jesus will return one day to establish His eternal kingdom, and our influence in the world will be the catalyst to worship God. I guess we have plenty to do especially for the price being offered in verses 1-4!

  • What do you think about this prophecy?
  • How would you feel if everything you need for your family or yourself have already been provided?
  • How much of an influence are you for the kingdom of God?
