If you exhibit laziness, apathy, and anger, you can expect your people to exhibit the same character. If you show up late, take little care for your appearance, and show disinterest in your position, your people will reflect it or hold you in disdain.
Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity. 1 Tim 4:12 (NIV)
Leaders are to show courage, competence, candor, commitment, and integrity. We can never expect more from our people than we are willing to do. Standards should be known and even written.
Why is this so important? You cannot correct someone who is following your example. You cannot inspire someone any more than you show inspiration. Examples open the door to the best training you can ever give to your people.
I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them. John 13:15-17 (NIV)
As a minister, I have a responsibility to set a proper example. If not, I am held accountable by God. If I do, I experience the blessings of God. Those are the standards I move under. Proper example will uncover any uncertainties about how your people are to act. You cheat; they cheat. You are honest; they are honest.
Similarly, encourage the young men to be self-controlled. In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us. Titus 2:6-8 (NIV)
By setting the proper example, you have the opportunity to cut off any condemnation of your actions when you hold your people to the same standards. Be a good role model, and raise the positive perception of your organization from inside as well as from outside.
