John 1:8 NIV
"He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light."
Without looking at your Bible, can you name this person? (Cue Jeopardy music....)
Give up? I asked my kids this morning, and my wife and I both tried to give clues to who he is.
He ate locusts and honey. He wore animal skin clothes. He was the cousin of Jesus. He was a few months older than Jesus.
Get it yet?
He was not the light because Jesus is the light. However, his role on earth was not any less important. He was a witness to the light. He foretold of the coming One and urged people to repent of their sins - give up the things that separate them from God.
This man even called the priests a brood of vipers! Talk about boldness. He was not ashamed to proclaim the message of God's salvation and no one man would intimidate him. Reminds me of the street preacher I saw the other day boldly urging people to repent.
We are all to be a witness to the light when we ask Jesus to be our Savior. We have to pick and choose how we will do it. I recommend reading Just Walk Across the Room by Bill Hybels for a good lesson in sharing your faith.
Oh, have fun looking up who the verse is speaking about if you still do not know...
