Storing Up the Right Treasure

Psalm 119:11 NIV

"I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you."

Legends are born from the stories of lost and hidden treasures.  People for centuries have journeyed around the globe seeking the great treasure that will make them rich and famous. They dream that treasure will make their life perfect,  so they search.

Great kings used to store up treasure.  They kept it to prove their wealth and strength, to show off, and to have enough money to raise up a mighty army when the time called for it.  Ships have sunk carry taxes back to kings.  Robbers and pirates have stolen these treasures and hidden them for themselves.  And the treasures remain hidden.  This treasure can always be stolen from those who possess it.

The psalmist spoke of this type of storing up but God's Word is a treasure that cannot be stolen. Hiding God word in our heart - through memorization, prayer, and continual study - is preparation for the future.  For the psalmist, God's Word is key to avoiding sin.  Why?  How can we know what sin is until we know what displeases God?  Until we know the heart of God?

Studying God's Word is a pursuit of God.  It is a pursuit of holiness.  The more we secure it in our hearts the more it permeates our lives and our lifestyles.  The analogy of the psalmist about hiding the Word is not so it becomes lost for the ages but stored up to be used as needed every day of our lives.

God's Word is valuable to living an abundant life.  Treasure it.  Allow it to seep through your life and see how you emerge from an ordinary life and into true abundant living.  Pray, study, and memorize it and allow it to draw you closer to God's heart.  Store it up and sin not against God.
