Matthew 2:19-23 – A Comforting Peace

With Herod dead, Joseph could now return with his family to Israel. Joseph has two dreams in this passage: first, to tell him to return to Israel, and second, to tell him to avoid Jerusalem because Herod’s son was in charge. I wonder how much time was spent in Herod’s search for the new born king of the Jews. He seems to have been very obsessive. Now, his son was in charge. Was he the same as his father?

Each move of the family of Jesus places Him in position to fulfill prophecy. As a baby, He had to rely on the obedience of Joseph and Mary to the instructions of God. As a young boy he begins to make His own way in ministry as seen in Luke 2:41-52. As teacher, He fully assumes His role as Savior. This all started with faith in God.

What can we take away from this short passage?
  • God is true to His Word – He fulfills His promises as seen in the list of answered prophecies by Matthew. God will be true to His promises to you. What promises are you awaiting to be fulfilled? How are you stirring your faith in God?
  • God is in control – Yes, Herod was dead and his son was now ruler. God did not return Joseph into a lion’s den. God guided Joseph to a place so unlikely for a king that Herod’s son never paid any attention. God will guide us to His peace if we will listen. How aware are you of God’s gentle guidance in your life? Are you comforted knowing God is in control and never forsakes His people?
