We Have a Problem - Ephesians 5:3-4

Ephesians 5:3-4 NIV

"But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people. Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving."

We have a problem.  In fact many will not rear this because they do not want to change nor do they want to consider the truth of God's Word.

Paul says a few things here that are controversial.   One, he calls us a holy people.  Two, he says there should not be even one hint.  Holy people do not have room for sinful acts that draw us away from God.  Sexual immorality (homosexuality, cohabitation, pornography...), any kind of impurity (acts and thoughts that defile the human body), and even greed can lead to other sins.  These are not just gateway sins.  The presence of these sins reveals the presence of other sins. Sin is sin, and it separates us from God.

Paul was not trying to be judgemental.  He was being honest. This is where the problem exists.  People do not like the honesty of Christians, and rightly so in some cases where Christians have done a terrible job in sharing their faith and honesty.

Paul also added that we should avoid obscenities, coarse jokes, and foolish talk (Facebook would be a lot more quiet).  What used to be frowned upon is now in everyday life and many do not blink an eye.

Sorry if being honest is offensive.  Sorry if God's Word seems to judge, but wouldn't you like to hear the truth now rather than in front of God where He passes judgment? Wouldn't you like a chance to correct your relationship with Him now while you have a chance than in front of Him where He will not hear any testimony...

Let Jesus become your advocate and the Holy Spirit become your guide. Just avoiding sin is not enough, and He understood that.   That is why He promises to be with us always. You do not have to do this alone. Get with Bible believing people who will encourage you and teach you. Above all be teachable! Share what you learn and praise God.  Be holy as God is holy.
