Ministry and Outreach

Galatians 6:9-10 NIV

"Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers."

What is the difference between ministry and outreach?   Should there be a difference?  Typically, many refer to both words as being the same.  I like to differentiate them.

Outreach or evangelism is God's command to all Christians.  It is our responsibility to share our faith with others.  How we share it varies.  It may include inviting someone to church (a proven method of church growth) or working in a soup kitchen.   There are also opportunities to share faith when supporting a missionary who goes to places you may not have the chance to go.  In all, outreach is good work but to those who are not active in a church.

Ministry is showing care to those within the church.  These may or may not be Christians.   They are active in the church.  Ministry ranges from helping new moms, teaching or leading a Bible study, or running a support group.  Ministry comes in many forms but is geared "especially to those who belong to the family of believers.'

When a church is actively involved in both, it is a healthier church.  The harvest comes to those who do not give up.  Do not grow weary because you do not know the true impact you may be having.  Keep up the good works.  Keep up the faith.
