Tis The Season To Be Debt Free!

Listen up folks. If you are using credit cards this year to buy your kids or family gifts, then shame on you. Christmas is not about giving gifts so you can have heart failure the day after Christmas when the credit card bill arrives.

My wife and I finished the Dave Ramsey program earlier this year and paid cash for all our gifts this year! I am not here to brag, but to encourage you. You can also return to a cash flow that makes sense! Stop the madness.

Here is how:
  • Set up a gift budget! Count how many people you are going to give a gift to and divide them by your cash budget. Stick to it. For example: $200 divided by 10 people equals $20 spending money on each person.
  • Next, do you have to buy a gift for every person on your list this year? If they will be slighted then go ahead and buy one but if they would not mind your making a gift (food of some kind, etc) then make them a gift this year.
That's it. Two simple ways to keep your sanity this year and keep you from hating a season you should be loving. There is a real reason for this season and He loves you regardless. Remember that as you are shopping this year.

What about next year? Start saving now. Set aside $25 a month or something comparable. You will have $300 for next year's gifts.

Don't let Christmas break you. The greatest gift you can give your kids is a sound financial mind garnered on the lessons they learn from you and your sound financial practices. They will love you for it, and you will love you for it.

Also, find a church or organization that is using the Dave Ramsey Financial Peace University. Take the class. Conyers Church of God will holding its next class on January 17th, 2010. You can contact me if you are interested.
