Being an Example

Romans 16

This is it. Post number 34 about the study in Romans. Hope you have enjoy what you have read...

Paul's letter comes to a close here. He hits on three points:
  1. lift up others who are working hard for the Lord, as Paul does repeatedly
  2. be wary of those with selfish ambitions
  3. remember to use prayer wisely - pray diligently
More than just a missionary, Paul was a leader. Many were equipped by him. Many became his travel companions. Many reached out to him, as seen in this letter. Paul was not afraid to consider others better than himself. He consistently delegated authority by sending team members to aid churches or by leaving team members in regions with new churches. Paul was sought out by Onesimus, the Romans, and even world leaders seeking debate.
I urge you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Keep away from them. For such people are not serving our Lord Christ, but their own appetites. By smooth talk and flattery they deceive the minds of naive people. Everyone has heard about your obedience, so I am full of joy over you; but I want you to be wise about what is good, and innocent about what is evil. Romans 16:17-19 (NIV)

Spending time recognizing strong leaders is another way Paul shows his leadership abilities. What I find fascinating is how Paul is very adamant in highlighting good examples of the Way to the church in Rome. He uses these "greeting" as a way to show the difference between a real follower and "those who cause division."

Paul commends the Romans for staying strong and being obedient regardless of false teachers. He reminds them to stay away from such teachers, to remain wise about what is good, and to remain innocent about what is evil. Staying away from false teachers means Christians must adhere to solid biblical teaching and the true gospel message (which is supported by the Old Testament teachings).

To honor the good is to be led by the Spirit and to be conscious about what we surround ourselves with:
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable--if anything is excellent or praiseworthy--think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me--put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you. Phil 4:8-9 (NIV)

Remaining innocent requires us to be in control of our bodies. Those who seek evil will find it and eventually be influenced by it.
Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is--his good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12:2 (NIV)

We should all be excited about the crushing blow awaiting Satan by the hand of God!
The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet.
The grace of our Lord Jesus be with you. Romans 16:20 (NIV)
I end saying this: Peace cannot exist without God. That is more hope than anything this world has to offer. Know God loves you and is with you. God bless.
