Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope. Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us. Romans 5:1-5 (NKJV)
For the next several days, I want to talk about the developing Christian. The study on Don't Waste Your Life has spurred a thought process within me to find out who I really am as a Christian. Am I the title or is it a way of life?
When you look at the above passage, there is nothing more reassuring than knowing that "hope does not disappoint" especially when you are trying make your place in the world. But that does not help when all of the world is falling apart around you.
That's where verse one brings comfort. We have access to faith through grace. Grace is a free gift that gives us access to the Almighty God through Jesus Christ. The comfort comes from knowing that grace has already accomplished everything that we cannot. All we have to do is receive this free gift and begin to live by faith.
Paul gives us in Romans a progression of faith.
- Tribulation or suffering is something to rejoice in or while we go through it (not to be morbidly sought out) because faith suffering is never meaningless.
- Perseverance develops confidence.
- Character is influenced by the company you keep.
- Hope is not just for us but for those around us who need it.
