The Interview: Are You Ready?

One of the most requested needs we pray for in my Sunday school class has to do with finding a job. We have all been there. Looking for a job can be a daunting task.

But what happens when you get that chance to interview for the job? How ready are you for it?

Let me ask you some questions to find out:
  • What do you know about the company? You should do your research. Most applicants are tossed to the wayside because they show little knowledge about the company for which they are applying. Your knowledge will show your desire to be a part of the team.
  • What do you know about the position? Here is where you need to be honest. Do not try to plow your way through questions you do not know about. Interviewers are looking for honesty. They are also looking to see how qualified you are for the position. They cannot find that if you are not being honest. If you do not know the answer, then be truthful and say so.
  • Why are you there? The job interview is about you and your ability to fit into the company. Your personal problems should not be vented. Your political and religious affiliations do not matter. If you are wanting the job then dress like it, act like it, and smell like it.
  • Are you ready to answer? Here is just a few questions you may receive from an interviewer: "What's your biggest weakness?" "Why do you want to work here?" "Tell me about yourself." "Why did you leave your last job?". Think about these questions before you go to the interview so you will be ready to answer them. Google interview questions if you need to.
  • Can you be ready to smile throughout the process? Your demeanor says everything about you. Smiling shows confidence. It will also help you to remember not to be harsh when talking about previous employers.
Here are some good suggestions:
  1. Turn off your cell phone! Absolutely end of discussion.
  2. Do your grooming before you get there. Armpit checks are not allowed. Brushing your hair is not allowed. Go into the bathroom ten minutes before the interview and check yourself out and use it if necessary.
  3. Dress professionally.
  4. Be there ten minutes prior.
  5. Drive to and from the interview.
  6. Do not bring anyone with you!
  7. Do not interview if you are not planning to keep the job long.
Think on these things. They just may get you a job.
