Before a downfall the heart is haughty, but humility comes before honor. - Proverbs 18:12
The key word here is "before". Before reminds us that we are responsible for our actions. Before reminds us that there are things that can happen prior to encountering our current circumstances, and sometimes we are not responsible for those things.
Being haughty comes with time. God doesn't zap us just because we have a moment of pride. Haughty is letting pride swell our heads to an attitude that makes us feel superior to everyone. What we fail to realize as we head down this path is that our haughtiness is destroying relationships and opportunities. Haughtiness creates the fall.
One thing I have learned while planting the church I am currently pastoring is that all the plans I have are not any good if God is not honored. My own desires for, and understanding of, church growth matter little if I am not humble enough to know that God must be first in it all. Many are the plans that fail of those who do not seek first the kingdom of God - those who do not seek to know the plans of God.
God honors those who realize they need Him in all things. It doesn't mean we do not try. It simply means we realize where true strength originates. Do not let pride destroy your relationships and opportunities. Trust God and live.
