I was reading a couple of articles in the suddenly free newspaper that has shown up in my driveway. I am not sure where the paper is coming from but I must admit I enjoy reading it, at least until I read two news clips. I will get back to the study on Amos later - I just had to comment on this...
Reggie Bush was given "improper" benefits while attending USC. You have got to be kidding me! How dare a school give a player improper benefits while this student is getting a free education, free room and board, and free books, and probably free meals. Okay, that is not what stood out the most to me.
Reggie Bush now stands a chance of losing his Heisman trophy. The school he attended is being penalized two bowls for the next two seasons and is losing 30 scholarships. They also have to vacate (whatever that means) every win in which Reggie Bush participated in for the 2004 into 2005 season. When the NCAA deals out punishment they come down hard.
Then I read about Atlanta Falcons lineman, Quinn Ojinaka, who was suspended "without pay" from the season opener this year. Oh, dear! What was his malfunction? Ojinaka decided to throw his wife down the stairs and then out of their home after she got mad that he was spending too much time on Facebook with another woman! How dare she demand fidelity! It's an outrage! But seriously, one game?
Bush stands to lose the Heisman and his school is being thrown to the lions because of improper benefits. Ojinaka beats his wife and misses a game without pay. Where is the justice?
The Bible says (yep, I am going to quote it) - "Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them." (Colossians 3:14, NIV)
I believe Bush and USC are facing a fair punishment. They broke the rules and breaking the rules has consequences. The Falcons, however, are getting away with murder. Maybe a little harsh, but if I was the owner - Mr. Ojinaka would be walking to work and he would be attending counseling and I would really have to see true repentance in his actions if he ever wanted to touch the field again. As for his wife - she should get the suspended pay among other benefits - including his kissing her feet on a daily basis until she was satisfied with his apology.
And that is why I am not a judge and have yet to serve on a jury!
