And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope. Romans 5:3-4 (NKJV)
On my wall in our family room/office/playroom, I have a framed photo of the beach with the caption at the bottom: Perseverance - Any dream worth having is a dream worth fighting for
Yesterday, I discussed the role of suffering in the life of a developing Christian. Since we are always developing, suffering plays a constant role in our life. The amazing thing about suffering is that is develops perseverance.
According to the American Heritage Dictionary, perseverance means steady persistence in adhering to a course of action, a belief, or a purpose; steadfastness. Theologically, it is simply a continual and patient dependence on Christ.
Life is not like a sitcom or old seventies show where people are stopped in action as they just finished some heart warming scene and then credits begin to roll. Salvation comes and we have to go to work. The title of Christian does not make us experts at enduring suffering. Suffering produces patience. It creates maturity in the various situations we face in life.
You can always know if someone has learned a lesson from suffering by how they deal with the situation and in how they look to help others. They either have a lot of words to share or they listen thoroughly before giving real timely advice.
Patience is desperately needed in the life of a Christian. Suffering whether for your faith or in general must be tempered with convictions that help you "survive the moment." It also develops confidence. Look at Hebrews:
So don't lose your confidence. It will bring you a great reward. You need endurance so that after you have done what God wants you to do, you can receive what he has promised. Heb 10:35-36 (GW)
Whether you believe in the assurance of salvation or whatever, we should all agree that those who strive to live a life of holiness should do so because they are confident in what the Word of God says. Using what the definition of perseverance tells us, heaven is a reward worth fighting for.
Character depends on perseverance. Great people are those who hold on to their convictions. Great Christians are those who live out their convictions. Perseverance is revealed in character (which I will deal with tomorrow).
Perseverance is an action. It is a choice on our part to keep going and being steadfast no matter what life throws at us. Our faith in Christ as Savior will take bumps from those who oppose our faith. You have to decide as to whether or not you will continue in your faith regardless of what others say about it. Our faith will face sufferings regardless of how often you read the Bible or go to church. Your faith practices (before, during, and after the trials you face) will determine your perseverance.
So my question to you, is just claiming to be a Christian enough to help you persevere during the good times and the bad?
